About the role

Octerra is building a listed-markets and commodities capability alongside its private investment pillars. The Equities & Commodities Trader will help build the strategy and risk framework alongside the Managing Partner, select and onboard brokers and custodians, and then trade the book day to day across Nigerian, US and Asian equities and a commodities sleeve covering selected industrial and precious minerals.

We want a disciplined discretionary trader with strong macro and fundamental judgement, accountable for every position they take.

What you'll do
  • Trade the Nigerian equity market through licensed dealing members, working within NGX market structure.

  • Trade US-listed equities, and Asian equities across Hong Kong, Japan, and other markets, through appropriately regulated international brokers.

  • Run the commodities sleeve across selected industrial and precious minerals.

  • Manage the naira and dollar dimension of the book: currency exposure, conversion timing and the constraints on moving capital between Nigerian and offshore accounts.

  • Develop and document a strategy for each market and asset.

  • Own trade capture, confirmation and settlement, and the reconciliation of broker and custodian statements, with the Head of Operations.

  • Select, onboard and manage brokers, custodians and market-data providers, and negotiate commissions and financing terms.

What we're looking for
  • Seven to ten years trading equities, a material part of it on the NGX at a dealing member, asset manager, bank treasury or proprietary desk.

  • Demonstrable experience in US equities and in at least one major Asian market, with a verifiable track record and a clear account of your process.

  • Hands-on commodities experience covering gold and crude oil at minimum, and a working understanding of futures curves, roll costs, physical-versus-paper dynamics and the instruments open to an offshore investor.

  • Rigorous risk discipline. You can explain your sizing, stop and limit framework, and you have run a book through at least one severe dislocation.

  • Fluency with market-data and execution platforms – Bloomberg, LSEG Workspace, broker platforms – and strong Excel. Python or similar for analysis is an advantage.

  • Integrity, accountability and comfort operating with real autonomy and complete transparency to the principals.

Useful but not required:

  • CFA or CMT.

  • Nigerian regulatory registration.

  • Experience standing a trading desk up from nothing.

  • Familiarity with FGN bonds, T-bills and OMO for cash management within the book.

  • A background in energy or mining markets.

What we offer

A senior, hands-on role in a lean investment team with direct access to the Managing Partner, on a multi-asset, multi-jurisdiction platform.

We assess candidates on merit and welcome applications from all backgrounds.
