Why we invested
Picture this. A woman runs a small business that works. Her shop turns a profit, her customers come back, and her order book is full. She needs a modest loan to buy more stock and meet the demand in front of her. By any sensible measure she is a good bet. And yet, she is turned away. Not because the money isn’t there, and not because she isn't creditworthy, but because the one lender she happened to approach doesn’t structure loans for someone like her, and she has no way of knowing that another lender, a few clicks away, would have said yes that same afternoon. The capital existed. The borrower existed. What failed was the matching. That daily failure is what Fundably is fixing.
What moved us was realising she is not one woman. She is millions of them. It is unfortunately difficult for the small and medium enterprises that employ most of the working world to access financing. They are often turned away not for being a bad bet but for knocking on the wrong door. What’s broken is the connective tissue between borrower and lender, and when you fix that you don’t rescue one shop, you unlock a whole class of businesses the system fails by accident. Zak and Ioannis came at this as a highly motivated team who genuinely want to close that gap, not merely trade in it.
Crucially, this window had only just opened when we invested, making this perfect timing for us. Had Zak and Ioannis pitched us two or three years earlier, the idea would have failed solely because the digital financial infrastructure simply did not exist.
So, we keep coming back to her. Somewhere right now, a good business that would have heard “no” is hearing “yes” instead and going home a little larger than it was yesterday. Then it happens again, in another shop, in another town, to another owner who never learns how close the door came to staying shut. Fundably is turning an everyday “no” into a “yes”. That, to us, is the whole point.
