Why we invested
The phone call came, as these calls often do, from someone who sounded exactly like the bank.
The caller was calm. Helpful. He knew just enough.
By the time Gbenga's mother realised the voice did not belong to her bank at all, the scammer had what he needed, and her account was being emptied.
The family did what anyone would. They rushed to the bank, explained what had happened, pleaded for help, and filled in the required forms. The staff were sympathetic, but entirely powerless. There was simply no way for them to prove who was real and who was not, and so the money left.
Somewhere in that moment of helplessness, Gbenga found the question that would ultimately become his company:
In an economy going digital, why is it still this hard to be sure who you are dealing with?
There are other RegTech firms in the market, but what convinced us about Youverify was the specificity of its solution.
Most tools photograph an ID and hope for the best. They read the document, not the truth behind it.
Youverify checks a person or a business against the authoritative government data underneath, then layers identity verification, compliance screening, and ongoing risk monitoring into a single platform that clients can integrate without needing an engineer.
It is the difference between recognising a passport and knowing it belongs to the person holding it. In a market where fraud is frequent and data is fragmented, that difference is the whole game. On top of this, the founders are precisely built for this fight. Gbenga lived the problem and saw the gap, while Famous is the builder who translates ambition into reality.
We backed Youverify because a digital economy cannot scale on a foundation no one can trust; because these two have built that foundation better than anyone else in the market; and because they understand, in a way that cannot be taught, exactly what it costs when that foundation is missing.
Somewhere, right now, that calm voice is calling someone else.
Quietly, in the background, Youverify is the reason the call fails.
That is the company we invested in.
